Hows it going.
I've had a few emails asking for some hints and tips latley so this page here will have interesting facts, tips and hints. Enjoy.
1 - Cuttlebone/Cuttlefish is not a good source of calcium. Pet shops sell this simply because it is easy to get and they can make money from it. The birds do not each much of it, they play with it and scratch at it. Get some calcium and iodine bells or some calcivet/avi-cal for the birds, they will love it so much better than cuttlebone. Also try some eggs, full of calcium, even the shells are full of it.
2- Budgies do not get pregnant.
3 - Budgies need more than seed and water. Look on my diet page to see what I give them, also try the feeding Journal.
4 - The "male budgies have blue ceres and females have brown ceres" is not true. Pet shop workers commonly say this because they do not know anything else. Some males will have pink ceres, example ino's and recessive pieds. Some females when out of breeding condition will have blueish white ceres.
5 - When a hen is about to lay you will notice very large droppings
6 - Avocado and apple seeds are very bad for budgies, so is cabbage.
I will make a few more when I have time. If you can suggest some more tips to post, email me at pearce_flint@bigpond.com
