My start in the hobby began in 2003. I was going to high school and the holidays had just began.
I went out and bought a pet budgie from a pet store. After a few months I decided that I wanted to breed budgies for enjoyment. I went out and bought 10 Australian budgies from a friend at the flea market. All were the standard light green budgie.
I then transformed my chook pen into an aviary, it was about 8 meters by 3 meters. I colony bred at that stage, had about 15 nesting boxes around the aviary. I managed to breed a good amount of chicks, but then the problems came. I found that rats were getting into the aviary under the ground, and so were snakes. The rat's urinate in the birds water and seed and spread countless diseases.
After all that occurred I decided to transform my garden shed into an aviary, it was a cement floor. Once finished, the birds were then moved into this smaller, better aviary. I decided I did not want to colony breed any longer, so I removed all the nest boxes. I then started to selective breed pairs in cages.
I have managed to breed over 200 baby budgies with this setup, it is working really well for me. I am going to join a local budgie society and I will start showing my birds.
